Post Trip Insurance Note: See information about the insurance for the Post Trip Extension to Zanzibar under the optional Spice Island of Zanzibar post-trip extension information in the itinerary. All foreign visitors traveling to Zanzibar are required to purchase mandatory "Inbound Travel Insurance" from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC). Additional Notes
Physical Activity: You must be able to walk 1-2 miles unassisted and participate in 2-4 hours of physical activities each day. Traveling in a safari vehicle on poorly maintained roads can cause problems for travelers with back and leg pain.
CPAP Machines: If you use a CPAP Machine, you may only bring one that runs on rechargeable batteries.
Animal Encounters: You may encounter animals during this trip. While we take every precaution to keep these interactions safe, animals can behave unpredictably at times. Please use caution: keep a safe distance, stay alert, and always respect wildlife.
Weather Considerations: October in Tanzania is one of the best times to visit. It’s still the dry season, and the chance of seeing wildlife is high. Temperatures range from 45°F to 100°F, depending on the areas we are in on this trip.
What to Wear & Pack: Layering is key for Tanzania in October. We recommend lightweight, breathable layers. The days can be hot, but the mornings and evenings can be cool. Pack t-shirts, long-sleeve shirts, and a light jacket. Bring a fleece jacket or sweater for the mornings and nights. Try sticking to neutral colors such as beige, khaki, or olive to avoid attracting insects. Protect yourself from the strong African sun by wearing sunscreen, sunglasses, and bringing a hat. Wearing comfortable, weather-appropriate shoes is essential for exploring outdoor sites. Rain is possible, so packing a light waterproof jacket or umbrella is advised.
You may also want to bring binoculars for spotting wildlife at a distance, a flashlight, bug spray, a power bank to charge your phone, and a plug adaptor.
When visiting a local primary school, you can, if you wish, bring deflated soccer balls and basketballs, educational books with pictures for the school library, maps, crayons, coloring books, and pads of drawing paper to donate to the school.
Time Zone: Tanzania and Zanzibar are in East Africa Time (EAT), which is UTC+3. Tanzania does not participate in daylight saving time.
Voltage: Tanzania and Zanzibar operate on a 230V, 50Hz supply, using Type D and Type G plug sockets. You will need a voltage converter for single-voltage appliances (such as a hair dryer), while dual-voltage devices (like laptops, phones & cameras) only need a plug adapter.
Currency: Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). Tanzanian Shilling TZS is necessary for small purchases at small shops and in remote villages. However, US Dollars (USD) are widely accepted in the bigger cities. It is recommended to carry cash, especially smaller denominations of both TZS and USD, for local shops, tips, or incidental expenses. Credit cards (Visa or Mastercard) are accepted in most major cities throughout the region.
Dietary Restrictions: We’re happy to accommodate most dietary restrictions with advance notice. Please let us know of any allergies or special meal requirements prior to travel so we can ensure a great dining experience.
Travel Documents (Passport/Visas): A passport is required for this trip. It should be valid for at least 6 months after your scheduled return to the U.S. U.S. citizens will need visas for this trip to both Tanzania and Zanzibar. Once you are booked, you will receive information on how to apply for your Visa with instructions, applications, and a list of visa fees—approximately 100 days prior to your departure. (Because many countries limit the validity of their visa from the date it is issued, or have a specific time window for when you can apply, we do not recommend applying too early.)
Vaccinations: Travelers on this adventure will NOT need a yellow fever vaccination. Tanzania does not require a yellow fever vaccination if you are arriving in Tanzania from the U.S., Canada, or Europe. This is true for both the mainland and Zanzibar Island.
Terms and Conditions: Please read our trip terms and conditions.

- Once the balloon has ascended, you can stand upright and enjoy the view.
- Upon landing, you will again sit, with knees bent, on the floor of the basket. Depending on wind strength, landings may involve the basket bouncing along the ground.
