Zanzibar Island Extension: The Spice Island After Your Tanzania Safari
After your Tanzania safari, continue to Zanzibar Island for a 5-day extension that adds the Indian Ocean coastline, Swahili culture, and the historic atmosphere of Stone Town. This post-safari experience gives travelers time to slow the pace, stay near the water, and see another side of Tanzania through its coastal history, spice traditions, and island life.
Zanzibar is a natural addition to a safari in Tanzania. After days of wildlife viewing in Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park, and Ngorongoro Crater, the island offers a different kind of discovery. Walk through Stone Town’s narrow streets, explore the setting that made Zanzibar known as the Spice Island, and enjoy time along the coast with the ease of a guided extension already arranged for you.
Travel Deliciously approaches Zanzibar the same way we approach the rest of the trip: with thoughtful planning, a strong sense of place, and experiences that help you connect on a deeper level. This extension brings together history, food, local culture, and time to enjoy the setting without having to coordinate more flights, hotels, or logistics on your own.
Why Add Zanzibar to Your Tanzania Safari
A Tanzania safari and Zanzibar itinerary gives travelers the chance to experience two distinct sides of the country in one trip. After game drives in Serengeti National Park, Tarangire National Park, and Ngorongoro Crater, Zanzibar offers a change of pace with coastal scenery, historic streets, and time to enjoy the island setting. It is one of the most popular ways to extend a Tanzania safari for travelers who want wildlife, culture, and Indian Ocean views in one vacation.

We’re happy to assist you in exploring coverage options. Email gm@traveldeliciously.com or call 414-567-8018 if you need assistance or have questions regarding purchasing insurance for this trip.
Important Note about Travel Insurance: The Zanzibar government is mandating travel insurance for all inbound travelers. This mandatory travel insurance must be purchased through the approved Zanzibar Insurance Corporation. The insurance is valid for up to 92 days in Zanzibar and costs $44 per person. We recommend waiting to purchase the insurance until you are at least 30 days out from your departure. You can purchase the insurance through the approved Zanzibar Insurance Corporation at www.visitzanzibar.go.tz. If you already have travel insurance, either through the Travel Protection Plan offered by Travel Deliciously or on your own, you will still need to purchase the additional mandatory insurance to travel to Zanzibar. You will be denied entry at the immigration checkpoints should you arrive in Zanzibar without proof of insurance.
If you choose to purchase Travel insurance from a company other than Travel Guard, please email gm@traveldeliciously.com with the following insurance details.
- Traveler Name(s)
- Trip Protection Provider
- Policy Number
- Date of Purchase
- Copy of your Policy Documents
When purchasing insurance from Travel Guard, please select either the Preferred or Deluxe Plan. DO NOT Purchase the Essential Plan. This plan does not have enough coverage.
Post Trip Insurance Note: See information about the insurance for the Post Trip Extension to Zanzibar under the optional Spice Island of Zanzibar post-trip extension information in the itinerary. All foreign visitors traveling to Zanzibar are required to purchase mandatory "Inbound Travel Insurance" from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC). This insurance costs roughly $44 USD per person (valid for up to 92 days) and must be purchased before arrival to avoid denied entry or delays at immigration
Additional Notes
Physical Activity: You must be able to walk 1-2 miles unassisted and participate in 2-4 hours of physical activities each day. Traveling in a safari vehicle on poorly maintained roads can cause problems for travelers with back and leg pain.
CPAP Machines: If you use a CPAP Machine, you may only bring one that runs on rechargeable batteries.
Animal Encounters: You may encounter animals during this trip. While we take every precaution to keep these interactions safe, animals can behave unpredictably at times. Please use caution: keep a safe distance, stay alert, and always respect wildlife.
Weather Considerations: October in Tanzania is one of the best times to visit. It’s still the dry season, and the chance of seeing wildlife is high. Temperatures range from 45°F to 100°F, depending on the areas we are in on this trip.
What to Wear & Pack: Layering is key for Tanzania in October. We recommend lightweight, breathable layers. The days can be hot, but the mornings and evenings can be cool. Pack t-shirts, long-sleeve shirts, and a light jacket. Bring a fleece jacket or sweater for the mornings and nights. Try sticking to neutral colors such as beige, khaki, or olive to avoid attracting insects. Protect yourself from the strong African sun by wearing sunscreen, sunglasses, and bringing a hat. Wearing comfortable, weather-appropriate shoes is essential for exploring outdoor sites. Rain is possible, so packing a light waterproof jacket or umbrella is advised.
You may also want to bring binoculars for spotting wildlife at a distance, a flashlight, bug spray, a power bank to charge your phone, and a plug adaptor.
When visiting a local primary school, you can, if you wish, bring deflated soccer balls and basketballs, educational books with pictures for the school library, maps, crayons, coloring books, and pads of drawing paper to donate to the school.
Time Zone: Tanzania and Zanzibar are in East Africa Time (EAT), which is UTC+3. Tanzania does not participate in daylight saving time.
Voltage: Tanzania and Zanzibar operate on a 230V, 50Hz supply, using Type D and Type G plug sockets. You will need a voltage converter for single-voltage appliances (such as a hair dryer), while dual-voltage devices (like laptops, phones & cameras) only need a plug adapter.
Currency: Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). Tanzanian Shilling TZS is necessary for small purchases at small shops and in remote villages. However, US Dollars (USD) are widely accepted in the bigger cities. It is recommended to carry cash, especially smaller denominations of both TZS and USD, for local shops, tips, or incidental expenses. Credit cards (Visa or Mastercard) are accepted in most major cities throughout the region.
Dietary Restrictions: We’re happy to accommodate most dietary restrictions with advance notice. Please let us know of any allergies or special meal requirements prior to travel so we can ensure a great dining experience.
Travel Documents (Passport/Visas): A passport is required for this trip. It should be valid for at least 6 months after your scheduled return to the U.S. U.S. citizens will need visas for this trip to both Tanzania and Zanzibar. Once you are booked, you will receive information on how to apply for your Visa with instructions, applications, and a list of visa fees—approximately 100 days prior to your departure. (Because many countries limit the validity of their visa from the date it is issued, or have a specific time window for when you can apply, we do not recommend applying too early.)
Vaccinations: Travelers on this adventure will NOT need a yellow fever vaccination. Tanzania does not require a yellow fever vaccination if you are arriving in Tanzania from the U.S., Canada, or Europe. This is true for both the mainland and Zanzibar Island.
Terms and Conditions: Please read our trip terms and conditions.
